Employment
Jill McGowan has worked in Health, Social Care and Education for over twenty years. The various disciplines included- Learning Disabilities, Acute Services Coronary Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit (Respiratory), Accident and Emergency, and Community holding posts as Community Manager and Practice Nurse and Audit Manager. Educational experience has been gained in further education of colleges, schools and laterally as lecturer at Paisley University-subjects taught include Biological Sciences, All Nursing subjects, Research, Social Care, Ethics and Law.
Specialist Areas: Respiratory Medicine, Manual Handling, Trauma Care, Triage, and Community Care.
She has featured in numerous media articles, including newspapers, medical journals, live television programmes, radio talkback, news programmes throughout the United Kingdom and Australia. She is also the organiser of a large clinical trial in Scotland.
Study and Research
Jill has been involved as organiser, researcher, supervisor, participant, and research assistant in numerous projects, from audit to health care management. She is currently a doctoral student studying the impact of the Buteyko Institute Method on Asthma Management. She received two national awards for her work - Great Scot 2001 and Pride of Britain -Carer of the Year 2002. These were featured in national television and press and as a result of meeting Capt William Morange from New York Police Dept and Mike Keyhoe (New York Fire Dept) Jill was invited to New York to work with those involved in the 9/11 atrocities. She was also invited to the House of Commons, Westminster as a guest of M.P. Anne Campbell, who had secured an Adjournment Debate, featuring Jills work. She has lobbied members of parliament and the British Thoracic Society and Jill has had a paper accepted for presentation at the British Thoracic Society Winter Meeting in December 2003.
Personal Experience.
Jill was taught the Buteyko Method by Sasha Stalmatski in 1996 and experienced significant improvement and symptom reduction within the 5-day programme. This was the factor that led to the study being organised and implemented. She then undertook the practitioner training programme studying under Alexander Stalmatski, Professor Buteyko and Paul OConnell. Jill has also qualified as a Buteyko Institute Practitioner Trainer, bringing training facilities to the UK, Ireland and Europe. Jill runs regular courses in hospitals, health centres in Glasgow, Greenock, Edinburgh and throughout the United Kingdom and Eire for individuals suffering from asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, broncheoctisis, cystic fibrosis, alveolitis, sleep apnoea, snoring, allergies, rhinitis, sinusitis, anxiety, M.E., chronic fatigue and M.S. Professional Aims
Jill has always been a leader in innovations to improve the health of community and with the current research is committed to promoting the Buteyko Institute Method to a platform where the method is widely recognised, validated and accessible. She also promotes that ongoing development; training and research of the method will ensure evidence-based practice, in keeping with international guidelines of best practice.
